New findings indicate a notable drop in city break costs across popular destinations, reflecting economic shifts.

    • More than 50% of city break destinations have seen a decrease in tourist expenses, attributed to a stronger sterling and reduced accommodation prices.
    • Vilnius emerged as the most affordable city for a short break, with Amsterdam topping the list as the most expensive.
    • Price comparisons include costs of common holiday expenses such as meals, drinks, and short-term accommodation.
    • Planning is advised as costs vary significantly between cities, despite the general trend of price reduction.

The latest survey by Post Office Travel Money reveals a significant decrease in the cost of city breaks in more than 60% of popular destinations. This trend is largely due to the strengthening of the sterling and a decline in accommodation expenses. As a result, tourists are finding it cheaper to explore numerous cities.

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has been highlighted as the most economical city for a short break, costing £236.51 for common holiday expenses. These expenses cover a range of items including accommodation, meals, and local transportation. In stark contrast, Amsterdam remains the priciest, with similar costs amounting to £669.40.

Eastern European cities, such as Vilnius, Lisbon, and Krakow, dominate the list of affordable destinations for city breaks. This is the fourth consecutive year Vilnius has held the top spot for value, demonstrating its continued appeal among budget-conscious travellers.

The survey also noted the strengthened position of the pound against nearly all European currencies, except the Polish zloty. This currency advantage contributes to lower holiday costs for British tourists in European cities.

Laura Plunkett from Post Office Travel Money advises that budgeting for meals and drinks is essential, as these are significant additional costs often overlooked when planning city breaks. In cities like Lisbon and Athens, low prices for these items make them attractive options for travellers seeking affordability.

In summary, declining costs in many city break destinations present a favourable opportunity for tourists, though careful planning remains essential.
