Expedia Group has announced two innovative programmes focusing on sustainability and community support, aiming to transform destination management organisations (DMOs).

    • The Destination Climate Champions programme offers online training to help DMOs develop climate action plans, currently piloted in 30 destinations.
    • Destination Giveback Initiative involves Expedia donating to local causes identified with DMOs, enhancing community support and tourism growth.
    • Research shows growing consumer preference for sustainable travel options, with up to 90% seeking sustainability in bookings.
    • Expedia collaborates with Travel Foundation to implement these initiatives, reflecting a shared vision for eco-conscious travel.

Expedia Group has taken a significant step forward in promoting sustainable tourism by launching the Destination Climate Champions programme. This initiative seeks to assist destination management organisations (DMOs) in developing effective climate action plans. The programme is designed to address the complexities of sustainability in tourism, a challenge many DMOs face. Initially, the programme is being piloted with 30 destinations across Europe, New Zealand, the northwest United States, and Canada, and is expected to be rolled out globally within the year.

The Destination Giveback Initiative further emphasises Expedia’s commitment to community support. This programme includes financial donations to local causes that are jointly identified by Expedia and its DMO partners. A notable example is Expedia’s donation of $100,000 to the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada, demonstrating a tangible impact on local communities while promoting tourism growth.

Research conducted by Expedia highlights a significant consumer trend towards sustainable travel, with 90% of consumers actively seeking sustainable travel options. Additionally, half of these consumers would consider paying more for sustainable options, underscoring the increasing importance of eco-friendly practices in the travel industry.

Expedia’s partnership with the Travel Foundation, a leading industry NGO, plays a crucial role in these initiatives. The collaboration reflects a shared vision of transforming travel into a more environmentally conscious industry. As Rob Torres, senior vice-president for media solutions at Expedia Group, notes, “Our partnership with Travel Foundation reflects our shared vision of a travel industry that prioritises both people and the planet.”

Aditi Mohapatra, vice-president of global social impact and sustainability at Expedia Group, states that the programmes offer much-needed initial support to DMOs aiming to integrate sustainability and social impact into their practices. “Many DMOs are eager to take proactive actions on sustainability and social impact but may need initial support to get there,” she explains. This initiative not only empowers DMOs but also encourages travellers to make responsible travel decisions.

Expedia’s new programmes mark a pivotal advancement in aligning tourism with ecological and community-focused objectives.
