The Foreign Office has raised an alert due to heavy rains impacting Cape Town and surrounding areas, increasing flood risks.

    • Localised flooding is anticipated as the South African Weather Service forecasts persistent rain until 12 July.
    • Authorities urge residents and visitors to reconsider non-essential travel and remain informed via local media updates.
    • Power outages have been reported, with the city’s council working to repair electricity infrastructure amid worsening weather.
    • City officials and emergency teams are actively addressing faults, maintaining public safety as a priority.

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Cape Town, Drakenstein, and Stellenbosch due to a forecast of disruptive rains. The alert follows reports of heavy downpours and warnings of localised flooding. Affected areas are advised to stay informed through local media channels and to exercise caution.

The South African Weather Service has predicted that the rainfall will continue until Friday, 12 July, with the potential for further disruptions after this period. This weather is part of a broader pattern of extreme conditions affecting global regions, highlighting the increasing volatility linked to climate change.

Residents and visitors in Cape Town are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to remain vigilant about potential hazards. In particular, the local government has emphasized the dangers posed by rivers and large pools of water. The advisory notes the importance of staying clear of such areas to ensure personal safety.

The City of Cape Town has experienced power outages due to storm damage, with officials working tirelessly to address more than 100 electricity-related faults in a single day. Mayoral committee member for energy, Xanthea Limberg, acknowledged the potential for further weather-related damage to infrastructure. Limberg stated, “Our dedicated teams have already attended to more than 100 electricity-related faults in the last 24 hours.” The teams are committed to resolving these issues swiftly, providing much-needed services to affected residents.

Vigilance and adherence to local advisories remain key for residents and visitors in navigating the impacts of these severe weather conditions.
