A significant number of travellers have inadvertently planned their holidays during Euro 2024, sparking mixed reactions.

    • 38% of holidaymakers booked trips prior to Euro 2024 match announcements, leading to unexpected overlaps.
    • 57% of those travelling aim to avoid the matches, while 52% are excited about the coincidence of travel and sports.
    • One in five travellers expect the event to spark disagreements with partners due to differing interests.
    • The tournament is anticipated to boost local economies, especially if a traveller’s national team performs well.

A recent survey has highlighted that more than a third of holidaymakers will find themselves abroad during Euro 2024, having booked their vacations before the tournament dates were confirmed. The poll, inclusive of 1,700 participants who are travelling with their partners, reveals that 38% unintentionally scheduled their trips to coincide with the football event.

Despite efforts by 57% of respondents to avoid engaging with the matches, a notable 52% expressed pleasure at the synchronicity of their travel plans and the tournament. Interestingly, the survey indicated that a deliberate 33% of holidaymakers chose to travel during this period, suggesting diverse attitudes toward the event’s impact on holiday experiences.

In response to football fervour, 32% of those looking to sidestep the tournament plan to embark on solo boat trips, 39% intend to explore local towns, and 29% will relish the quietude by the poolside. The data also shows that 21% of travellers considered altering their travel arrangements upon realising the overlap, while 13% contemplated booking an additional holiday for later in the year.

The anticipation surrounding Euro 2024 has not been entirely negative. Half of the participants believe that the performance of their national team could enhance their holiday experiences, and 43% foresee a positive impact on local economic conditions as the tournament progresses. However, concerns about potential conflicts with partners were evident, with one in five expecting arguments to arise.

A company spokesperson commented on the situation, noting, “The Euros are a huge driver for travel this summer. Some individuals may have planned their trips with the matches in mind, while others may seek to escape the football festivities. Regardless, options abound for travellers wishing to balance enjoyment and evasion during Euro 2024.”

The Euro 2024 tournament presents both opportunities and challenges for holidaymakers, with varying impacts on travel experiences and local economies.
