    Sustainability in Travel Current Perspectives

Sustainability in the travel industry varies across companies and markets. Stakeholders express differing priorities in sustainability efforts. Consumer interest in sustainable tourism remains limited. Industry leaders debate responsibility for driving sustainable changes. Varied approaches and strategies are highlighted among major players.

Sustainability within the travel sector remains a contentious topic, with varied priorities among different market players. Donat Retif, the chief executive of Loveholidays, incorporates customer feedback into his strategy, noting that sustainability ranks low among consumers’ priorities. “Usually it comes 20th out of 36 criteria in importance,” Retif states, indicating a lack of willingness among clients to pay extra for sustainable options.

In contrast, other travel operations, such as Jet2holidays and easyJet holidays, emphasise the importance of sustainability endeavours. They assert that the burden of driving sustainability largely lies with industry operators rather than consumers. Steve Heapy of Jet2 highlights the existence of a dedicated sustainability team, acknowledging that while it’s not yet top of customers’ wish lists, its significance is growing.

Furthermore, Heapy references the future challenge of reporting on Scope 3 emissions, reinforcing the need for industry commitment to environmental measures. Garry Wilson of easyJet holidays echoes this sentiment, emphasising the ethical responsibility organisations hold in ensuring fair practices, such as the treatment of hotel staff and community engagement.

These differing perspectives underscore the complexity of achieving sustainable travel practices. Loveholidays adopts a consumer-choice model, providing filters for environmentally aware clients, while other operators proactively pursue sustainability within their business frameworks.

The conversation about sustainability is ongoing, with the recognition that comprehensive strategies and clear roadmaps are essential for significant progress. Retif’s comments, although reflective of current consumer preferences, highlight an area of growth and potential transformation within the travel industry.
