Las Vegas Canadian Tourism Decline Squeezes Strip Workers as Recovery Data Trickles In

The Las Vegas Canadian tourism decline is hitting service workers hard, with local employees reporting sharp falls in tip income as Canadian visitor numbers remain well below prior-year levels, even as the city’s headline tourism figures begin to edge back up.

Canadian visitation to Las Vegas dropped 17.4% in 2025, equivalent to roughly 252,400 fewer visitors compared to the previous year. The city received 1,196,300 Canadian visitors in 2025 overall, a 17.42% fall from 2024, leaving Canada nonetheless the top international source market for Las Vegas. Mexican travel to the city rose 1.06% to 1,187,400 visitors over the same period, nearly closing the gap.

    Workers Feel the Financial Pinch

The human cost of the Las Vegas Canadian tourism decline is showing up in tip packets across the Strip and beyond. Joe Spica, a bellman at a Strip resort, told ABC News that he once covered multiple family dinners from a single day’s tips. Now, he considers himself ‘lucky’ to cover one. Aaron Mahan, who works at an off-Strip restaurant that scaled back from 24-hour service to a breakfast-and-buffet-only model, put it plainly: ‘Everything’s costing more.’

Las Vegas welcomed 38.5 million visitors in 2025, a 7.5% decline on 2024, representing some 3.1 million fewer visitors. Lower hotel occupancy has compressed the service-sector income that tip-dependent workers rely on month to month.

Mahan, who described himself as a registered Republican who voted for Donald Trump twice before opting out in 2024, said the administration’s ‘No Tax On Tips’ policy, which allows eligible workers to deduct up to $25,000 in tips per year from federal taxable income for the 2025 through 2028 tax years, offers little immediate relief. ‘It doesn’t really affect you until you get your taxes back. So, for a month-to-month relief, there isn’t much,’ he said.

Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley acknowledged the wider issue in blunt terms. ‘I did not realise until we offended the Canadians, how much of our foreign business came from Canada,’ she said, adding that while she is ‘pleased’ about the city’s current economic position overall, Canadian business in Vegas remains ‘very soft’.

Nevada Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto pointed to federal policy as the driver. ‘We have gone as a country from a $51 billion tourism trade surplus in 2019, to now a $70 billion trade deficit in this country on travel and tourism under this administration,’ she said.

Air Arrivals and 2026 Recovery Data

Passenger data from Harry Reid International Airport illustrates the scale of the Canadian air-travel retreat. Total international arrivals on Canadian carriers fell 24.2% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, dropping from 397,168 to 301,037 deplaned passengers year-to-date. Air Canada bucked that trend in June 2026, bringing 19,565 international passengers to Las Vegas, an 11.42% increase on June 2025’s 17,560. WestJet and Porter Airlines, however, both recorded falls in the same month.

Broader Las Vegas tourism data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) shows a modest 0.2% increase in visitor volume year-to-date through June 2026. Convention attendance spiked 12.6%, hotel occupancy held steady at 82%, and Clark County gaming revenue is up 2.5% so far this year, with the Strip contributing a 3.2% rise. June visitation edged down 0.5% year-over-year to 3,079,800, but that compares favourably with the sharp 11.3% drop recorded in June 2025.

Las Vegas Canadian Tourism Decline Prompts Targeted Campaigns

To address the Las Vegas Canadian tourism decline, LVCVA approved a three-year, $3.5 million deal with Reach Global Marketing to promote the city across Canada. Circa Resort and Casino chief executive Derek Stevens went further in January, launching an ‘At Par Program’ across his properties: Circa, the D, and Golden Gate. The promotion accepts Canadian dollars at parity with US dollars for select hotel stays, bar spend, and up to $500 CAD in gaming credits.

According to PAX News, the programme has drawn more than 75,000 Canadian tourists, generated over $15 million in slot coin-in, and produced more than 7,500 hotel room nights. The offer remains open: Circa Las Vegas confirms the At Par programme runs through 31 August 2026, giving operators a further window to convert Canadian interest into bookings before the offer closes.
