Travel agents are optimistic about a strong sales month in January.

    • There was significant customer interest and inquiries following Christmas.
    • Predicted weather conditions have both helped and hindered foot traffic and sales.
    • Upcoming ‘Sunshine Saturday’ is expected to contribute significantly to January bookings.
    • Despite some weather setbacks, agents remain hopeful for a promising January.

Travel agents express optimism for a prosperous start to the year, predicting a “bumper” January in terms of sales. The narrative builds on promising customer interest and inquiries during and after the festive season. According to agents, the trends indicate a gradual increase in bookings that might peak post this weekend’s anticipated ‘Sunshine Saturday’.

In the weeks leading up to ‘Sunshine Saturday’, bookings have reportedly been on par with or have exceeded those from last year. Phillip Iveson, a renowned commercial director, highlighted that the “appetite for travel has never been greater.” This sentiment reflects the high demand typically observed post-Christmas, which agents expect will continue this year.

Notably, a December poll revealed that over a third (37%) of consumers are likely to book a summer holiday during this season. Sandra McAllister from Althams Travel expressed optimism despite bad weather impacting high street footfall, stating, “I’m hopeful January will prove to be a bumper month.”

Sales trends across various agencies show differing results, with some reporting a slight upturn in inquiries towards the end of December. Sarah Kenton from Triangle Travel noted that the busy start to the year indicates a positive outlook for January, albeit with some sales potentially occurring post ‘Sunshine Saturday’.

Agents have observed that the quality and volume of bookings have been encouraging. Despite weather challenges, such as floods affecting footfall, Jennifer Lynch from ArrangeMY Escape remains hopeful. She points to strong social media engagement as a tool to maintain visibility and drive future bookings.

Advantage Travel Partnership reported a noticeable increase in bookings and revenue compared to the previous year, expecting further peaks as the month progresses. Kelly Cookes emphasises the impact of media campaigns, stating, “Sunrise Saturday is a key date although it falls before the first post-Christmas payday.” The anticipation is that clients might delay booking until later in the month, adding to a strong January overall.

Prominent destinations such as the Canaries and mainland Spain have been popular among customers, contributing to the positive forecasts. Jacqueline Dobson from Barrhead Travel affirmed, “January is still one of the most popular times to book,” aligning with the general anticipation for a strong travel season.

January is projected to be a strong month for travel sales, buoyed by sustained interest and strategic market engagements.
